AARP: The Doctor Will See You but Not Your Insurance
Posted on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at 6:00 PM

Fed up with waiting weeks for a medical appointment — and then getting only a few precious minutes with your doctor? The unnecessary tests and referrals to a specialist? Insurance hassles, red tape?

So are doctors. And a small but growing number are refusing to accept their patients' medical insurance. Instead, doctors are running their practices on a "membership" model that they claim allows them to spend more time with their patients and to provide better care.

It's called direct primary care, a less expensive offshoot of concierge medicine, which traditionally has been reserved for higher-income patients who pay thousands of dollars per year for longer appointments, better access and more personal care with their doctors. (But in addition to memberships, some concierge practitioners accept insurance; direct primary care doctors don't accept any insurance.)

So, is direct primary care right for you? Here are answers to some questions you may have:

CONCIERGE MEDICINE JOURNAL

Erie’s First Direct Primary Care Practice – Izbicki Family Medicine

Beginning in September 2013, Izbicki Family Medicine is excited to pioneer Erie’s 1st insurance-fee medical practice, known as Direct Primary Care.  As a Direct Primary Care Practice, Izbicki Family Medicine will operate on a monthly membership, which provides unlimited access to a private physician without worrying about paying co-payments, coinsurances or deductibles because they believe that patients do not need to pay extra when they are concerned about their health. Because Izbicki Family Medicine will be an insurance-free practice, they will offer many services free of charge, in order to maximize their patient’s health.  Izbicki Family Medicine will also be offering wholesale medications, lab tests and discounted radiology services, which will be of substantial savings to patients.

PENNSYLVANIA: Erie medical office to go insurance free
Posted on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 6:00 AM

Featured in Direct Primary Care Journal:  JULY 13, 2013 – Izbicki Family Medicine has already kicked Medicare out of its office.  On Sept. 15, the Erie practice will cut ties with all commercial health insurers, including Highmark, UPMC Health Plan and HealthAmerica.  “We are going insurance-free,” said Harry Izbicki, D.O., who owns the practice, at 3424 Peach St., with his brother, Jon Izbicki, D.O. “Patients will pay a monthly fee and receive unlimited office visits.”  Stagnant insurance reimbursement rates and rising health-care costs have convinced the Izbicki brothers to create one of Pennsylvania’s first insurance-free primary-care practices, according to the Pennsylvania Medical Society.  Other doctors, including Millcreek Township physician Jack Yakish, M.D., have converted to what is commonly called a “concierge practice,” but this is different, said Harry Izbicki, 38.
